The Critical Importance of Indoor Air Quality

Introduction

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is increasingly recognised as a critical public health concern. Ranked among the top five environmental risks, IAQ directly influences the health and comfort of building occupants.

Silbury House will assess air quality in the whole building by installing continuous air-monitoring sensors for the benefit of all occupants.

Health Impacts

The presence of pollutants in the air can lead to immediate health effects like eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and worsened asthma symptoms. Long-term exposure can pose serious risks, including respiratory and heart disease.

Productivity and Performance

Poor IAQ not only affects health but also impacts cognitive function and productivity, with improved air quality shown to boost cognitive function by 61% and productivity by 8-11%.

Material Choices and IAQ

The selection of low- or no-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) interior furnishings and materials is crucial in improving IAQ. Strategies include using low-VOC products, proper ventilation, and plants that absorb VOCs.

RESET Standards and Air Quality

RESET, the first performance-based standard for the built environment, emphasises real-time monitoring of fine air particles, CO2, temperature, humidity, and TVOCs (Total Volatile Organic Compounds). This monitoring leads to increased occupant comfort and satisfaction.

Silbury House's Commitment

Pursuing RESET Air Core and Shell certification, Silbury House will assess air quality in the whole building by installing continuous air-monitoring sensors for the benefit of all occupants. Additionally, indoor monitors will be installed providing real-time air quality data to occupants, a standard above and beyond the requirements of RESET certification.
